  1. Heh heh. Penology. Heh heh.

    Sorry, couldn’t help it.

I think this would make people go insane, which might do more harm than good. But I wouldn’t be totally against it…in fact, I might break the law more if I knew I’d be detained all by myself without the threat of bad things happening to me at the hands of prison society. 😉 I’d be bored, sure, but at least I wouldn’t be afraid.

You bring up a good point, which is that some people might really enjoy this kind of treatment. In retrospect, my point isn’t so much that total isolation is a great idea, but that the system needs to stop offering psychological alternatives to resocialization. A prisoner may recognize that he or she “deserves” to be in prison, but he or she should never feel that he or she “belongs” in prison, if you follow my meaning.

  3. Indeed, if one chooses to place dice with the devil for their soul, as did Capt. Falkenburg and other ghosts of nautical lore, an endless voyage to judgement day will inevitably follow. Whether the isolation is imposed upon such individuals by society or by conscience alone, none can escape the fate of the flying dutchman…
